Open Play

Open Play at Yello Club is a fun, social way to play with others while keeping games moving and wait times short. All players must pre-register online to ensure we have enough players to hold the session. Games are played to an agreed format, and all players are expected to rotate fairly and include others who are waiting.

Open Play is available at specific times throughout the week, which are posted on our schedule below and may vary by day, age and/or skill level. If you prefer to play continuously with your own group, court reservations are always available outside of Open Play hours.

Our 2-hour Open Play sessions are FREE for members and $15 for non-members. Anyone is welcome, so bring a friend! Minimum 2 required to run a session; maximum 12-16 to ensure very short wait times. You will never wait for more than one game to play at Yello Club!

Yello Club Open Play Guidelines

At Yello Club, we pride ourselves on you never having to wait long for a game.

You have two great options when you play at Yello Club:

  • Reserve a Private Court – Play continuously with your own group of friends.
  • Join Open Play – Share the courts, rotate in with others, and enjoy a fun, social playing experience.

At Yello Club, we pride ourselves on you never having to wait long for a game.

  • Reserve a Private Court – Play continuously with your own group of friends.

How Open Play Works

Open Play means you share the courts and rotate with whoever is there. While groups may agree to play separately, the spirit of Open Play is about sharing court space, meeting new players, and enjoying games with different partners.

To ensure the shortest wait times and smooth rotation, we ask players to follow one of these formats:

  • 4 On / 4 Off – when 4 players are waiting

  • Winners Stay & Split – when 2 players are waiting

  • Shortened Games – play to 7 or 9 points if all players agree

These formats help games move quickly and keep everyone playing.

Choosing the Right Open Play Session

Please sign up for the Open Play time slot that best matches your skill level and, when applicable, age category (e.g., 55+).

To ensure a great experience for everyone:

  • If we notice you are not registered for an appropriate slot, you may be removed and notified.

Can I Set Up Open Play for My Friends?

Yes! We’d love to help.

  • We can create a dedicated Open Play time if you have at least 8 players committed to attending weekly.
  • With fewer than 8 players, we recommend:
    • Reserving a private court, or
    • Running your own Private Rotational Play using the formats above.

Please note:

  • Public Open Play sessions are open to other members and may change over time.
  • If an Open Play session does not consistently fill, it may be eliminated, and you are encouraged to use your included private court rentals so courts can be made available to others.

Email Lauren@YelloClub.org to request a new Open Play time — we can’t wait to meet your friends!

No-Show Open Play Policy

To keep Open Play running smoothly:

  • Please cancel at least 2 hours in advance if you can’t attend.

  • Open Play courts will be cancelled 4 hours prior if spots are not sufficiently filled, allowing courts to open for member reservations.

  • A $15 drop-in fee will be applied for any no-show without timely cancellation.

No-shows impact the entire group and limit court availability for others — thank you for helping us keep things fair and flowing!

Court Usage During Open Play

  • Open Play is not always on both courts.

  • Court availability depends on:

    • Number of players signed up

    • Other existing reservations

Guidelines:

  • Smaller sign-ups may result in one court being used

  • We set maximum registrant limits to ensure you never wait more than one game

  • While we aim for most sessions to use both courts, this is not guaranteed

Minimum Players for Open Play

  • Open Play will be cancelled at least 4 hours prior if fewer than 3 players are signed up

  • If 2 players remain signed up, the session may continue for:

    • Casual hitting

    • Skinny Singles (highly recommended — it’s fun!)

  • If 6 or fewer players are signed up, one court will be released for reservations

Thank you for helping us create a welcoming, efficient, and fun Open Play experience at Yello Club!

Lauren, Director of Pickleball at Yello Club
